A Winter’s Night

Saturday 9 December 2023, 7.30 pm
St Godric’s Church, Castle Chare, Durham

The Durham Singers will be giving a pre-Christmas concert entitled ‘A Winter’s Night’ – The Birth of Christ – on Saturday 9 December 2023 at St Godric’s Church, 2 Castle Chare, Durham DH1 4RD. The concert begins at 7.30pm. There will, of course, be audience carols, so come to listen, to experience this beautiful church, and to sing along with us!

Last year, the Durham Singers presented their Christmas concert on the theme of ‘Through Advent to Christmas Day’. This year we progress to the moment of ‘The Birth of Christ’. It is an event that has inspired composers for centuries and continues to do so, with a variety of interesting and thought-provoking musical responses. This concert is an exploration of just a few contemporary reflections on Jesus’s birth; some are deeply personal and intimate while others showcase great joy.

Alongside the audience carols, the choir also perform Cecilia McDowall’s title piece of this concert, ‘A Winter’s Night’, which is a reimagining of well-known carols. Other works include Morten Lauridsen’s ‘O Magnum Mysterium’, Kerensa Briggs’ ‘A Tender Shoot’, William Walton’s ‘All this Time’, Herbert Howells’ ‘Here is the Little Door’ and Alison Willis’ ‘There is no Rose’.

We look forward to our partnership with St Godric’s Church and hope to see you on 9 December.
