Musical Director: Julian Wright
On the Eve of Epiphany, the Magi arrive in Durham Cathedral through the vivid music of J.S. Bach’s Christmas Oratorio. We perform Parts 1, 2, 4 and 6, which recount the birth of Jesus, the visit of the shepherds and the arrival of the Three Kings.
We are joined for this performance by Samling Artist Timothy Langston (tenor soloist) and by young soloists from Samling Academy. Our professional period instrument orchestra, the Durham Singers Ensemble, complete the picture: gentle flutes and oboes set the scene for the shepherds and create an aura of mystery around the angels and the newborn child; a pair of horns summon the faithful to give thanks; and dazzling trumpets create a mood of infectious joy.
