Magnificat

Saturday 25 March 2023, 7.30 pm
St Cuthbert’s Chapel, Ushaw House & Chapels

Durham Singers will be performing the exceptional Magnificat by young composer Oliver Tarney.

The programme will begin with three very different settings of the Magnificat (My Soul Doth Glorify the Lord): plainchant from the Graduale Romanum ‘Magnificat Tone VIII’, Hieronymus Praetorius’ Magnificat Quinti Toni and Arvo Pärt’s Magnificat, sung by the Durham Singers, followed by Oliver Tarney’s ‘The Blackthorn Carol’, sung by vocal ensemble Vox Populi. After the interval, we will hear Tarney’s inspirational Magnificat, detailing the story of Mary.

Tarney’s highly approachable contemporary work (2014), for choir, soloists and small orchestra, offers amazing musical sounds, and demands vocal versatility. The Durham Singers will be collaborating with young professional and semi-professional musicians from our region to perform this challenging piece, which will be sung in the North East for the first time.

The vocal soloists will be members of Vox Populi – a consort of singers from the North East who perform small ensemble music.

We hope you will join us for an evening of extraordinary music in the historic, intimate setting of St Cuthbert’s Chapel.
